Pride of Baltimore II was commissioned in 1988 as a sailing memorial to her immediate predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore, which was tragically sunk by a white squall off Puerto Rico in 1986, taking her captain and three crew members down with her. Both ships were built in Baltimore's  Inner Harbor as reproductions of 1812-era topsail schooners, the type of vessels, called Baltimore Clippers, that helped America win the War of 1812 and finally secure its freedom. She is 157 feet long overall, and was launched April 30, 1988

Since her commissioning, Pride II has sailed nearly 200,000 miles, and visited over 200 ports in 40 countries in North, South, and Central America, Europe, and Asia . In 1998 she undertook her first voyage to Asia with port calls in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan .   • "50 Fabulous Years", a Powerpoint presentation where the Mackinac Bridge Chief Engineer will go through a historical perspective of the financing, construction, maintenance and future challenges of the Mackinac Bridge Authority.  This presentation will be given at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
  • Bridge personnel will have commemorative bridge tokens available for sale.
  • Maintenance workers will be on hand to discuss their work in maintaining the Mackinac Bridge.

Overview

The workshop will cover a wide variety of issues concerning wind, focusing on wind facility siting and regulation. Wind energy will be an important part of Michigan’s push to develop renewable energy sources, and municipalities should have clear policies that enable the installation of wind turbines and other necessary equipment. Many communities currently have unclear policies and regulations, and companies and landowners trying to establish wind energy facilities are unable to understand local ordinances. The workshop will provide local officials and others with the tools and resources necessary to implement a stragetic plan for wind energy development in their communities, while also providing them with an overview of wind energy and wind energy facilities.

Registration fee:  $55 per person; or $45 per person for MCPs or groups of 4 or more from the same organization or municipality.

A Rendezvous at the Straits French Voyager Reenactment and Powwow, a family event celebrating the history of the St. Ignace area, will take place Saturday, August 23, and Sunday 24, 2008,  at the Father Marquette Memorial Park in St. Ignace.  Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for elders and students.  There will be no charge for children younger than 12.

This family event is to be alcohol and drug free.  It is sponsored by the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau Special Events Committee, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippews Indians, the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce, and the Michilimackinac Historical Society.
